What DMZ actually is
DMZ is the extraction mode in Modern Warfare 4. You enter an open map with your own loadout, take contracts from the phone, and leave through an exfil point before the clock runs out. Anything you extract goes into your stash; anything you die with is gone. It is not a battle royale — you can finish a run without ever fighting another squad.
Why the mode confuses people right now
Because most pages mix DMZ with Warzone and with multiplayer progression. The three modes share weapons but not rules: multiplayer has no loot and no loss on death, Warzone has one winner, DMZ has a stash you build over dozens of runs.
Keys and buy stations
Keys are the difference between a warm-up run and a good one. They open locked rooms and safes that hold plates, self-revives and contraband weapons. Buy stations sell plates, killstreaks and gear, and they are also where you can buy a personal exfil when the nearest exfil is crowded.

Three extraction routes to learn first
These are the three patterns every DMZ map rewards. Learn them on your first evening and you stop dying at the exfil.
- The short loop. Land, take one contract within 200m, finish it, leave by the nearest exfil. Lowest profit, highest survival rate — the right way to rebuild after a bad run.
- The key run. Bring a key, go straight to the locked room, fill your backpack, leave. Only worth it when you already know where the room is; otherwise you burn the clock looking.
- The late exfil. Stay for two contracts, then move to a personal exfil bought at a buy station. More loot, more risk, and the route only works if you keep a vehicle fuelled.
